SHIBUI FINANCIAL DISCUSSION FORUM
Jan-27-05
Barney: Sliding prices for DVD recorders, TVs and other consumer electronics hit Sony's fiscal third-quarter profit, but it sought to reassure investors that it would press on with a restructuring plan to revive its fortunes.

Sony, which vies with Matsushita Electric to be the world's biggest consumer electronics maker, on Thursday posted a 13 percent fall in consolidated operating profit for the three months that ended Dec. 31.

Apr-20-04
Barney: April 20 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's second- biggest consumer-electronics maker, narrowed its fourth-quarter loss and beat its full-year profit forecast because of currency gains and a pickup at mobile phone, movie and finance businesses. http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/new...
Jan-28-04
ToTo: Sony is now paying the price for the big retsructuring and all those job cuts. 3rd quarter net lost about 26%.

There were huge charges though to pay for the severance packages. Maybe it is a good time to BUY sony? I expect next quarter to be much better by default.

Oct-28-03
gordonX: Sony is axing 20,000 jobs- about 13% of its global workforce. They are trying desperately to lower costs to compete with their Asian rivals.

Interestingly they are letting go 7,000 positions in Japan, jobs that are normally protected in the keiretsu. Jap jobs are very expensive nowadays, still it will be demoralizing.

Oct-23-03
SAVVY investor: They have competition on PlayStation 2 and other products. Now come the job cuts... in Japan!
Oct-23-03
martin707: The latest quarterly #s from SONY are dissapointing. It is to be expected that after so much growth their products are becoming stale. Also Korean companies like SAMSUNG are taking their toll.
Jul-28-03
SAVVY investor: Hey Chooby, good question/comment. It looks like they are trying to keep up a good dividend in spite of earnings, they still pay a very small % of cash, 851 bil. Dividends are important to share prices and widows' income.
Jul-28-03
Chubby Chooba: Maybe you folks can help a newbie understand how to read financial reports.

It says that the dividends for 2001 were -22.9 billion yen. I assume that means that they are paying out dividends, so it counts as a negative.

OK but now it says that their profit for 2001 was 15.3 billion yen. They pay more in dividends than they earn?? How long is that going to last? Or am I misreading this document?

Jul-28-03
valueseeker: Sony should learn from Samsung, the student becomes the teacher.
Jul-24-03
valueseeker: They grew very fast and far from their area of expertise. It is difficult to value their business for that reason. I'll be interested when they start divesting and focusing on their areas of expertise.
Jul-24-03
martin707: TOKYO (Reuters) - Consumer electronics firm Sony Corp. said Thursday that it barely eked out a net profit in its first quarter, hurt by cooling demand for PlayStation 2 game machines and slumping sales of Trinitron televisions.

Group net profit tumbled 98 percent from the year before as gains generated by its life insurance business could not make up for the lack of a box-office blockbuster like last year's "Spider-Man" and falling sales of Vaio personal computers and stereo systems.

Jun-25-03
  eljefe: Moodys downgraded SONY...
long-term unsecured senior debt to A1 from Aa3 and warned that there could be further cuts

"reflects Moody's concern that Sony may take longer than expected to regain its previous strong profit and cash flow generation patterns,"

Jun-05-03
ToTo: Hey people, what happen? I wasn;t able to post messages for two days?
May-30-03
martin707: Hey Value. the dividend is under 1%, for excitmenent you are better off getting one of their movies and flat screen tvs.

I guess 1% is not that bad in Japan.

May-29-03
valueseeker: How much growth can SONY produce now? It seems like a blue chip at this point without any exciting prospects. I'd be interested if they paid a high dividend.
May-28-03
martin707: "Operating margin is up, debt leverage is down... any thoughts on the stock?" Sony has restructured operations and reduced ;leverage.
